At our Friday Night Cocktail Tasting, we started with this Classic Sidecar, which, as one of my friends cleverly pointed out, is basically a brandy margarita.

Some felt it was a nice alternative to a margarita, with a little bit less of a tang. One friend called it a "winter margarita," and in the end we decided it is more appropriate to serve this in the cooler months. Everyone agreed that it was nice to experiment with more of a vintage drink, and it's kind of grown-up and glamorous feeling. We were all inspired to sample some more vintage cocktails the next time we get together.

The method described here - using boiled water and sugar - is a quick way to do the simple syrup thing if you don't have any on hand. If you use syrup instead, go lighter than three tablespoons (you can always add more). Serve the sidecar in a martini glass with a sugared rim.
